Book Junkie

I think that I mentioned the December DTC group's children's book club once before. We are now on week 9. I'm a little behind... and buying out of order. I like to shop at Borders and our little downtown bookstore (mostly) because I like having them there and don't want Amazon to put them out of business. I do order board books from Amazon, though, because they have a buy 3 get the 4th free deal that includes most board books.

This afternoon we were wanting to go out for a bit, so I suggested a trip to (insert maniacal laugh here) Borders. Rob can always be convinced to go to Borders because he can get an espresso drink and a fancy pastry and read magazines for free. I think that's allowed, by the way, because they charge a fortune for coffee and put the magazines right next to the coffee bar. Besides, while Rob is reading their magazines, I'm off shopping!

Anyway, my intention today was to buy week one's book, The Kissing Hand. No, I'm not that far behind, like I said I'm out of order!

Of course I opened the Chinese music cd immediately and played it the whole way home (5 songs worth). Rob was not pleased, he doesn't like Chinese music and wanted to listen to NPR. I am pleased to say, though, that he does like Diary of a Wombat. I don't know if a child would like it or not, but we thought it was laugh-out-loud funny.

Jan DTC Secret Pal Gift - July

Continuing the great-mail Monday, we also received a package from our January DTC Secret Pal! It was all kinds of travel meal-time stuff -- sippy cups, bowls with lids, baby utensils -- a set of interlocking rings and a bunny wrist rattle.

The timing was sort of amazing, because just yesterday I stopped in BRU (Babies R Us) - my first visit ever - and of all the thousands of things in the store I was somehow drawn to the travel bowls. I sure hope Nora likes Cheerios, because every image I have of her eating involved Cheerios! Cheerios in a travel bowl, Cheerios falling into her bib pouch...

Mondays are becoming a really good mail day at our house! Today we received two nice bibs from Karen. One is a pretty pink fruit motif bib and the other is a very practical vinyl-coated bears-of-the-world bib with a cheerio-catcher.

A Milestone!!

I just finished the previous post and and happened to notice our LID ticker (at the very bottom of the page, scroll all the way down). Today is our 6 month LID anniversary! If the current 12 month wait holds, we are half way there!

Some thoughts on surviving the wait

I think that the worst part about the wait is the lack of control. I felt this to some degree while waiting for our home study and then while waiting for the I-171H, but this is much worse. Probably because the wait is so much longer and real information is so scarce.

Wait time rumors abound, but we're trying hard not to get too caught up in that. I admit to checking the Rumor Queen at least once a day and to stalking CCAI's website waiting for the monthly newsletter (expected tomorrow!), but I also try to tell myself that the process takes however long it takes and in the end we will be matched with the child that we were meant to have.

It also helps to stay really busy. In addition to our Mandarin Chinese language classes, I am taking a sewing class and Rob is taking Aikido. We've connected with a couple of local Chinese adoption groups as well. This afternoon we went to a local FCC new members gathering and I am thinking of volunteering for some FCC committee work. It just doesn't feel right to participate in activities without putting something back in. I also feel strongly about being able to provide Nora with positive interactions with other Chinese people, both adopted and not. Anything that helps establish those connections is a good thing.

Letter from the President (well, sort of)

Back on June 6 I wrote a post about the need for a policy change regarding the I-171H. Well, I actually did write letters to our Representative, our Congressmen, the President and the USCIS. Today I received the first response -- from the White House. It was sort of a non-response, actually, the letter says:

On behalf of President George W. Bush, thank you for your letter.

The White House is sending your inquiry to the Department of Homeland Security. This agency has the expertise to address your concerns. They will respond directly to you, as promptly as possible.

The President sends his best wishes.

It was machine-signed as Darren K. Hipp, Acting Director of Presidential Correspondence.

At least I guess it's good to know that they opened my letter and read enough of it to direct it to the appropriate agency (the USCIS is housed under the Department of Homeland Security). I wonder if someone reads mail coming to the White House or if they use some sort of text-recognition software to respond and re-direct.

Ouch!

I'm not sure how I survived our previous trip to China without a zillion vaccinations, but I sure am making up for it this time! The CDC recommends that travelers to China be vaccinated for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid and tetanus. Depending on the region to which you are traveling, you might also need malaria (this one I think is an oral medication, not a vaccine) and rabies. I have a current tetanus vaccine, so I escaped that one, but made up for it by needing a MMR booster since my first dose was before 12 months of age.

The hepatitis A&B are combined in one series of three vaccinations. I had my first one about a month ago and the second one yesterday (#3 will be in about 5 months). Last night my arm was doing ok, but this afternoon it HURTS. Rob, the stinker, has already had hepatitis vaccinations at work so he only needed a MMR booster. We'll both go in for the typhoid shot closer to our travel date.

Because the hepatitis series takes 6 months to complete, you really need to plan in advance of travel. The requirements and recommendations for a variety of destinations can be found on the CDC's website.

What's Black and White...

and eats 42 lbs of bamboo per day?

Rob and I stopped at the healthy market on our way home from dinner tonight to pick up a treat (aka ginger soda) for this evening. There were a couple of people in front of us in line, so of course I looked at the magazines and this month's National Geographic caught my eye. How could it not with a cover like this??

The feature was timed for the National Zoo's panda cub Tai Shan's first birthday on July 9. Check it out if you have the time, it's very interesting and the pictures of Tai Shan are unbelievably cute. You can also see more of Tai Shan on the National Zoo's website. They even have a panda-cam!

Yay - happy mail on a Monday!! It makes the day "bear"able!

Dragon Festival

It is a beautiful summer day today. A perfect day for dragon boat races!

According to the Dragon Festival website, "Dragon Boat Racing originated in China in the third century, but is now a cross cultural sport with events throughout the world both at the local and international level. It's popularity merits its consideration as a demonstration sport at the Olympics and at the commonwealth Games. While Western dragons are fierce beasts to be slain by a hero like Saint George, Chinese dragons are entirely benevolent creatures with powers."

Mostly it was just a really nice day to spend outside at the park. It will be even more fun next year when Nora is here to go with us. I am so happy that we live in an area with an active Asian community. I think that will be very important for Nora as she grows up.

New Chinese Language Resource

This morning, I logged on to check email and instead of clicking past the Yahoo! homepage, I read the headlines and this one caught my eye. Apparently, China has launched a website with free Chinese lessons. The URL is www.linese.com. It looks like there might be a new lesson every day. Unfortunately the site seems to have some technical issues - I got a couple of errors trying to register and it is very slow to load, especially the audio which after 15 minutes I'm still waiting for. Still, I think this is a great idea and a really good way to promote the learning of Chinese. I'm so anxious to try it out!

Dec DTC - Secret Pal Gift for June

Nora gets the best mail! In addition to the pretty bibs from Kari, she also received a gift from our Dec DTC Secret Pal. This month's theme was "All About Asia" and our Secret Pal sent a red silk lantern and a ladybug case with the coolest wooden toys. There's a clown whistle, a ladybug top, a ladybug prizm and a mouse on a spring.

When I was little, my Mom had a wooden mouse with a broom. I used to put it in one of the cars of my brothers' model train and have it ride around the Christmas tree. Nora's mouse's face reminds me of our train-riding house mouse. Thank you, Secret Pal, today you brought a smile and a really nice memory!

July Bibs!

I love the first mail day after a holiday!! Today Nora received two new bibs from Kari - one is a fun jungle pattern with a pouch for catching wayward Cheerios and the other is a pretty floral fabric that says "Mommy's Girl". Thank you so much, Kari - it was really fun coming home to the mail today!

Happy 4th of July!

After a morning Chinese lesson (we are on an alternate schedule this week due to the holiday), we went to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum with Nora's grandparents (my Mom and Dad) who are visiting for the weekend. We brought a picnic and made an afternoon of it.

As long as we've lived here, Rob and I have never been to the arboretum. It is a really lovely place. We agreed that we'll need to bring Nora here for some photos with the flowers next year. Good exercise for us too - the place is HUGE!

News Flash - Mandarin is difficult to learn!

I feel validated! This week's issue of TimeAsia features several articles about learning Mandarin, which they say is one of the five most difficult languages to learn (the other four are Arabic, Cantonese, Japanese and Korean). It is a very interesting issue and is available online at: TimeAsia June 26, 2006. The thing that sticks in my head most is that it takes 2,200 class hours for the average English speaker to reach proficiency in Mandarin. So, at one class hour per week, we will be proficient in 2048!

One of the other articles was about study aids. I think I mentioned before that we are using Cheng & Tsui Integrated Chinese, which is pretty good - there's a link under "Favorite Shopping Links" to the right - but what we really wanted were flash cards and nothing we found seemed quite right. So, I decided to make flash cards for all the vocabulary words from the first three chapters (everything we've covered so far). I'm happy with the way they turned out and I think I might have learned a couple of characters in the process of making them!

More June Bibs!

Today we received two darling pink kitty bibs from Sandy. One says "Daddy Loves Me" and the other says "Mommy's Little Girl". They are so sweet and the kitties are the smoothest pink satin. They reminded me of those Taggies books http://www.taggies.com/ - I'm sure Nora will love the feel of them! Thank you very much Sandy.

Think we'll ever learn Chinese?

Now that we have Nicole to ourselves for an hour each week, Rob and I have decided to turn over a new leaf with respect to our learning of Mandarin. We are studying. Really studying, not randomly listening to cds in the car, hoping to gain something by osmosis. We have books, we have workbooks, we have cds and are actually doing lessons and testing our progress with the exercises. The kitchen table is our classroom, an iPod our lecturer.

Turns out I am good at pronunciation and terrible at tones. Rob is great at tones and terrible at pronunciation. Figures. No one will understand either one of us! Nicole insists that we will get better. I wonder.

Happy Father's Day!

Today is Rob's first Father's Day! Well, sort of. Even though Nora isn't home with us, I figure that she probably has been born by now and is waiting for us somewhere in China. So, today we will celebrate and hope that next year Nora will be here to celebrate with us.

I bought Rob two sweet children's books about fathers - "The Very Best Daddy of All" and "I Love My Daddy" - and a father-to-be card (of everything I looked at, it seemed to be most appopriate since it talked about what a great father he will be, which, of course is true!). I photographed them in "his" chair where I picture him reading to Nora.

I would have liked to have posted a picture of Rob today, but he has still not forgiven me for the one I posted of him practicing baby sign language! So, Happy Father's Day, honey! I hope that I have redeemed myself a bit with today's post!

Happy Father's Day also to our Dads! We love you and wish we lived closer so we could celebrate with the quintessential Father's Day BBQ!

Gifts from China

Rob just returned from a business trip to Shanghai. I sent a whole shopping list and he came back with, well, some of it. To his credit, though, he did get the important stuff - a Chinese zodiac papercut for Nora's lifebook and some children's cds. Our Chinese isn't good enough to make any sense of the cds, but we did ask Nicole, our Chinese instructor, about them. She said that one is famous Chinese poems (that's the one with the man in the robe) and the other one is children's songs about Beijing. The interesting thing is that none of the children in the cartoons appear to be Asian, maybe they are visiting Beijing?

I can't stop smiling!

Our January DTC Secret Pal gift for June came today. The theme was "Fun in the Sun" and Nora received a pail and sand toys for the beach and the cutest little outfits! One is a super-soft pink and orange terry cloth dress and the other is a bubble romper with big pink and orange flowers. She also got an adorable orange bucket hat.

Great job, Secret Pal, we love everything! I can hardly wait to take Nora to the beach (we have one about 7 blocks from our house). I figure if she can't be home for Christmas, then I hope that she comes home in May or June and we have all summer to play at the beach!

The gift of motivation!

My December DTC Secret Pal sent the coolest gift for May - it's a pedometer and it estimates calories burned! I'm so excited! I am going to take the dog for a walk later this evening and try it out. Thank you Secret Pal!

I-171H Expiration - Policy Change Needed

As you may know, families adopting children from other countries need to obtain immigration approval from the USCIS (formerly known as INS). The approval - called I-171H or I-797C - requires an application, fingerprinting and homestudy. The process is both expensive and time-consuming.

Once approved, the authorization is good for 18 months, which until recently was sufficient for families adopting from China. Because of the increasing wait times, though, it is very likely that currently in-process families will need to refile. This is costly and frustrating for us and a poor use of the USCIS' time - there are far more important immigration issues than re-processing already approved adoption files!

If you or anyone you know is in process or is considering international adoption, please take a few minutes to write your Senator, Representative, the President and the USCIS, asking that the expiration date of form I-171H/I-797C be extended to two years, longer if possible.

N is for Nora

After much frustration trying to make the ladybug doll bed quilt, I decided to take a break and work on something better suited to my skill level (beginner, very beginner). I got this idea from Kristen who cuts my hair. Kristen was a fine arts major and specializes in textiles - she weaves, she knits, she does it all and she's got great ideas. The last time I was in there she was telling me about a flannel blanket she made for her nephew with his initial on it. I thought that was a great idea and decided that I wanted to make one for Nora.

At the risk of sounding immodest, I think it's really cute. It's not done yet - I still need to do the backing and binding - but I'm really happy with the top. We won't talk about how long it took me to come up with just the right "N"!

More things for Nora's room

I found the prettiest paper lantern lights when I was out shopping today. I think they will look great in Nora's room. Hopefully they aren't too cheesy or too faux-Chinese. I bought them because I liked them, not because they were "Asian-inspired". It's funny, because if Nora weren't Chinese I wouldn't have thought twice about it.

Lifebook and Baby Book

I ordered these gorgeous silk albums from Chinese Adoption Document Organizers and More (www.cadoam.com). The red one is a 12x12 scrapbook-style album that I plan to use for Nora's lifebook and the pink one is her baby book. It came with pages customized for China adoptions (shown inset). The pages are fill-in-the-blank style, like your typical baby book, but include all the information that is unique to adoption, such as agency information, social worker name, etc.

Let the Sewing Commence!

I have an early birthday present - a new sewing machine! I am so excited, because this means that I can start on Nora's crib bedding and her one hundred good wishes quilt. Of course I need some practice first and my "How to use your sewing machine" classes don't start until June 22, so I'm inventing some smaller, low-impact projects to get some sewing experience.

Since my Mom and Dad are sending my old doll bed (which my Dad built for me when I was a little girl) for Nora, I decided that I would make some doll bedding that would match Nora's crib bedding. Nora's basic bedding - sheets and bedskirt - are Company Kids hot pink gingham and I found a lady bug quilt pattern (shown in second photo) that I plan to make for her in hot pink and apple green. The crib bedding will be a scaled-down and slightly modified version of that. The photo shows the ladybug bodies in progress in the five hot pink fabrics that I selected for the doll's quilt. I think it will be really cute. Of course I'll post a photo when it's finished.

Nora's Second Personalized Item!

This is truly amazing. Manette from the January DTC group made us each a personalized quilt square with the group's logo and our baby's name (I blanked out our last name in this photo). As if that wasn't enough, it is on a beautiful tone on tone heart fabric. The photo doesn't do it justice, it is absolutely beautiful and so special to us. I am going to make it into a decorative pillow for Nora's room. Thank you so much, Manette, you have outdone yourself.

Nora's First Personalized Item!

We came home from our Mother's Day weekend roadtrip today and found a package waiting for us on the porch. It was our May bib (and matching burb cloth) from Kara and it is personalized with Nora's name!! It is the very first thing she has gotten with her name on it. It is so special -- and at at Mother's Day no less! Thank you so much Kara - we love it!

May Showers Bring ... Pretty New Bibs!!

It is a dreary, cold, rainy day here today and I was starting to feel a little down ... but then I got the MAIL!! Thank you so much, Alyson, for the pretty pink butterfly bibs. They are so sweet and girly. I love them!

My Very FIRST First Mother's Day Gift!

What a momentous occasion this is - my very first ever Mother's Day gift! My Jan DTC Secret Pal gift for May arrived today. This month's theme was Happy Mother's Day - Something for Mom. My Secret Pal sent a beautiful first Mother's Day card, a Willow Tree figurine of an angel holding a baby, a Burt's Bees baby skin care kit, an "I Love You Like Crazy Cakes" board book and a pad of flower-and-ladybug sticky notes with my name on them.

Thank you so much, Secret Pal, for making this first Mother's Day special for me. I loved what you wrote in the card, also. It is an incredible thought that this time next year Nora will be here in my arms.

Gorgeous Children's Book

Tonight was the Dec DTC Children's Book Cybershower. It was really fun! Our gift came from Kim in Iowa. It is a really neat Chinese-themed alphabet book called "D is for Dragon Dance". It's really bright and colorful and the illustrations are just beautiful.

January DTC Cybershower

Tonight was the first cybershower for the January DTC group. Kathy was our cyber-shopper and she sent the most amazing, generous gift - two outfits, a snuggly pink velour blanket, a butterfly dish, a stuffed bear in a ladybug suit, a package of outlet covers (much needed - we have many more outlets than any normal house and not a single outlet cover!) and an "I Love My Mommy" bib. I think that I'm going to need to go get some "I Love My Daddy" stuff for Rob's Father's Day gift! :)

Be sure to take a close look at the green gingham dress on the left - it has ladybug appliques and BLOOMERS! It's just precious!

Thank you again, Kathy! You're such a sweetheart. And Maddie wants me to thank you for the tasty tissue paper.

Paper and Scissors and Adhesives, Oh My!

I've been trying to take control of the quilt situation and at least get the wishes in a scrapbook. Not being a scrapbooker, I think I've underestimated the level of effort needed to glue down all these bits of paper in a somewhat presentable fashion. The supplies have also taken over the dining room table! What's worse is that I'm no longer sure that it's all going to fit into ONE scrapbook.

Rob is talking about getting me a new sewing machine for my birthday, so I have two months left to get all the paper organized and prepare myself to begin tackling the sewing projects. Wish me luck!

Second April Bib!

We received our second bib from the CCAI Dec/Jan DTC bib swap. This one is from Amy and it says "I Love My Mommy" - what a nice thought after waiting so long to be a mommy! Thank you so much, Amy, it is adorable!

It's Here, It's Here, It's Here!!!

At long last we have received the infamous "brown envelope" from the US Consulate in Guangzhou! I have to admit that I don't know exactly what it is other than confirmation that our immigration paperwork has made its way to the consulate and a bunch of papers that we'll need to fill out in China.... but I'm SO GLAD it's here. Anything that seems like progress is great with me!

CCAI Dec/Jan DTC Bib Swap - First One!!

Julie from the CCAI Dec/Jan DTC group had a great idea for a bib swap! There are sixteen of us participating and each month we send one bib to two people (and receive one bib from two people). It is so practical and so much fun! Today we received our first bib from Melinda. I think it is so pretty and it's exactly the color of Nora's crib bedding, so I photographed it in her bed instead of in my usual spot on the kitchen island.

Bargain Baby Art from Target!

It started off as an innocent paper-towel buying trip... but then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw THEM! The cutest framed bug prints for Nora's room. Aren't they so cute?

December DTC - April Secret Pal Gift is Here!

The December DTC Yahoo! group is also doing a Secret Pal Swap. April was the first month and the theme was "Lucky Ladybugs". My secret pal sent a WONDERFUL Brio Ladybug pull toy and some ladybug chocolates (at least I think they are chocolate - I've managed to resist tearing in for their first 15 minutes in the house!).

I love Brio products, they are so well-made. Thank you very much, Secret Pal, for sending such a nice toy for Nora!

Travel Training DVD!

Yesterday we received CCAI's travel training DVD in the mail. We tried watching it last night, but Rob and I were both so exhausted that we fell asleep before finishing. I watched most of it on my laptop in the van pool today, though. It was very informative. I think I need to start on a packing list!

January DTC - April Secret Pal Gift is Here!

I'm so excited!! Our January DTC secret pal gift came today and it includes a crab bath sponge that makes a bubble sound. It is so cute and so appropriate since Rob and I are both summer babies - Cancer, sign of the crab! We are such water people and really hope to cultivate a love of the sea in Nora. We also got a bottle of Mr Bubble (very cool) and a rubber ducky that measures the temperature of baby's bath water and turns another color when the water is too hot (very practical - safety first!) ... but -oh- the crab. I LOVE HIM! Thank you Secret Pal!! You have us figured out!

Travel Packet #1 Received

At long last, we have received Travel Packet #1 from CCAI. It is great to have reached this milestone and we are so happy to have some additional information about the process to come. However, despite having received and read 15 pages of new information, I'm still hungry for more!!

Baby Sign Language

This morning Rob & I went to a terrific community education class - baby sign language. Learning sign language enables babies to communicate their needs earlier and more effectively than babies who do not sign (think of baby signing "milk" instead of screaming). The reasearch has found that babies who sign also aquire verbal language more easily and have greater reading, writing and verbal skills later in life. In addition, sign language can be used as a bridge between different languages.

We are very excited about this opportunity to give Nora a skill that will serve her well throughout her life!

What's the number for swappers anonymous?

If ever there was any question regarding my tendency to go a little overboard, the OHGWQ (one hundred good wishes quilt) fabric swaps should put all doubt to rest!

There is a tradition in the northern part of China to make a Bai Jia Bei, or "100 Good Wishes Quilt" to welcome and celebrate a new life. It is the custom to invite 100 people to contribute a single square patch of cloth. The 100 patches are sewn together into a quilt that contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric. We thought that this was a charming tradition and wanted to make a quilt for Nora to welcome her into our family as well as provide a connection to her Chinese heritage.

We received many beautiful squares and wishes from our family and friends, but I found a quilt pattern requiring 237 squares! So, I decided to participate in a few fabric swaps to fill the gap. Well, one thing led to another and now I have about 500 squares.

Luckily, many of these are destined for special projects such as a Chinese Zodiac book, an alphabet quilt and a state/province quilt. The others will go toward Nora's OHGWQ. I still need to take some photos of the squares - including the many precious clothing items - that we've received, but I do have a photo of the squares I've contributed to the various swaps. First Chinese Lesson

Tonight we attended our first Chinese lesson! We, along with another couple and their daughter, are working with a tutor, Nicole Darcy.

Tonight we worked on all the sounds and learned a song (to the tune of "Skip to my Lou"):

January DTC Secret Pal - March gift is here!

Today we received our March secret pal gift from the January2005DTC group! This month's theme is children's books and we received the Baby Einstein "Cats" board book, Boynton's "Hey! Wake Up!" board book and "Favorite Fairy Tales and Fables". The fairy tale/fable book has all the classic bedtime stories that I remember from my childhood, plus a few I've never heard of! It's really cool! Thank you secret pal!!

The Nursery

We are making slow progress on the Nursery compared to most of the folks I've met. We did finally get our act together enough to at least get a crib and some bedding. The walls in the room were already painted yellow in anticipation of it becoming the baby's room, so we didn't need to do any painting. I do sometimes think about the possibility of adding a mural, though (big dreams for someone who has done so little decorating!!)

January DTC Secret Pal

The January2006DTC Yahoo! group is having a secret pal swap. Today we received the first gift from my secret pal -- the theme was "Happy New Year of the Dog" and we received a fluffy Amy Coe stuffed dog, a Peter Rabbit board book and a beautiful handmade card with Nora's name on it. Thank you secret pal for the terrific gift and for making such a special, personal card!

Cybershower!

Today the Paperchase2000 Yahoo! group had a cybershower. Aubrey had my name and sent the cutest baby bed and bath gifts - a super-soft fleece blanket, washcloths and the cutest bunny-ear robe. Thank you Aubrey - we can't wait to see Nora in the robe!

Today we received notification from CCAI that our dossier has been logged in by the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA). Our official log in date is January 16, 2006! Now the long wait begins....
